A quaint cove nested between the mountains and a natural harbour, Moraira has been a prime coastal location for centuries. Its main economic activity, fishing, is still active today although most of the raisin merchants and pirates have long since departed. Legend has it that the town was named after a beautiful Moorish princess, Ira, la Mora, hence Mora-Ira. Moraira has a rich and visible history. The 16th Century beach castle, once a vital stronghold built to fend off raids by Barbary pirates, still stands and is now restored as a museum. It’s also one of the most sought after locations on the Mediterranean Coast.

It’s this foresight on the part of town planners which has undoubtedly allowed Moraira to flourish as a tourist destination whilst maintaining its charming features.
