As legend would have it, the furious locals drove a red hot spike through the hands of the pirate king, fixing him to the tower as punishment for raiding and pillaging the beaches up and down the coast. And that’s where the name comes from, Torre del la Mano Horadada, loosely translates as Tower of the Spiked Hand. Although pillaging is no longer fashionable on this side of the Mediterranean, today there’s a wealth of activities from sailing to dancing to hiking to take part in as well as a host of museums. There’s also some excellent value real estate to check out.
Orihuela Costa is probably the most blessed area of the municipality. 17 km of beautiful beaches, stunning natural scenery and turquoise blue sea with 320 sunny days a year and an average yearly temperature of 20 degrees make Orihuela Costa one of the best locations in Southern Spain.
Cabo Roig juts out of Orihuela Costa in between Torrevieja and San Pedro de Pinatar. Including the areas of La Zenia, Mila Palmeras, Torre de la Horadada, Playa Flamenca & Colinas Golf, and the area has been a popular destination for tourists and expats alike for many years. Great weather, beautiful beaches, excellent shopping all add together to make Orihuela Costa and Cabo Roig a really attractive area. There’s plenty of golf, and other stuff, as well great food and lively nightlife. Fantastic wildlife, marine sports and rambling opportunities, as well as great access to Alicante Airport for flights all over Europe mean a great investment for holiday homes or even buy to lets. There’s also a really rich history, from the ancient Roman theatre in nearby Cartagena to the archaeological museums in Orihuela, there’s plenty for all to do and see. And if ancient walls and roman theatre isn’t your thing, then you can always go jest skiing in the sea!
