Marbella Area Guide
Since its initiation as an exclusive summer destination for the European aristocracy and elite, Marbella has grown from a small Mediterranean village, to the present day cosmopolitan and prestigious town.
Marbella is a wonderful place to spend a holiday or to choose your residence.
The mixture of Marbella’s mild year round climate, Andaluca’s relaxed but lively style of living, and the cosmopolitan international community, creates a unique atmosphere. Many of the residents initially came to Marbella for a visit, and decided to stay!
The taste of the true Marbella is found staying in one of its attractive homes, whether it is an “old-world” aristocratic villa on the famous Golden Mile, an avant-guard style apartment on the seaside or a magnificent villa by the best golf courses.
Areas of Marbella
Marbella East – Los Monteros
The east area of Marbella that extends from Rio Real to the Port of Cabopino is the less developed part and enjoys with the best sand beaches, numerous “chiringuitos” and several golf clubs. In this area there are well-known urbanizations like: Torre Real, Rio Real, Los Monteros, Los Altos de Marbella, Santa Clara, Las Chapas, El Rosario, Elviria, Hacienda Las Chapas, Marbesa and Cabopino. The small Port of Cabopino with some restaurants and bars, marks the beginning of the Marbella municipality by the East, coming from Malaga.
Marbella Center and Old Town Marbella
The original small fishing village started here. “Old Town Marbella” is charming and traditionally Andalusian. It forms a labyrinth of narrowly paved streets, all leading to “The Orange Square” (Plaza de Los Naranjos). There are numerous shops, restaurants and cafes.
Marbella Center is the newer area of the city, with numerous businesses. The walk along the seaside promenade is very pleasant. This marble paved promenade stretches from Hotel El Fuerte all the way to Puerto Banus! Approximately 5 km. Some luxurious apartment complexes are situated here, like Marina Mariola, Gran Marbella, Los Cipreses and Alhambra del Mar near to the Gran Melia Don Pepe hotel.
The Golden Mile
This famous stretch is considered the prime location in Marbella, which received its exclusive reputation from the opening of the Marbella Club Hotel in the 50s. Aristocratic and elite families owned summer homes in this area, which initiated Marbella as an exclusive resort destination. Many of these beautiful old homes still exist today, such as Casa Los Llanos and La Coneja, which you can look up on our website. Today, this area boasts the best hotels, and many restaurants and shops along the roadway. Mediterranean style urbanisations and single home villas have also been built in the hills above this area.
The Mediterranean village “La Virginia” is on the Hills at the back of Marbella, as well as many other residential urbanisations like Sierra Blanca Cascada de Camojan, Nagueles, Las lomas del Marbella Club y Puente Romano. Nearer the beach you will find urbanisations such as Casablanca, Santa Margarita, El Vicario, La Coneja, Los Verdiales, Las Torres del Marbella Club, Marina Puente Romano, Oasis y Rio Verde.
The famous Puerto Banus, home of some of the most exclusive private yachts in the world. HRH Conde de Barcelona (King Juan Carlos’ father) often sailed into Puerto Banus on his sailboat “Giralda”. Today, a bronze bust of Don Juan de Borbon sits near the lighthouse in his memory.
The port has grown into Marbella’s main recreation area, with the opening of high-fashion designer shops like Lanvin, Carolina Herrera, Armani, Louis Vuitton, El Corte Ingls department store, banks and countless restaurants, cafes, bars, piano bars and movie theatres. For books in English, visit “Bookworld” opposite El Corte Ingls. Some of the most luxurious apartment complexes are here like Los Granados, La Alzambra, Playas del Duque, El Embrujo, Malibu y Bahia de Banus.
Nueva Andalucia is almost a residential city of its own. It is called the “Golf Valley” due to its numerous golf courses. It is mostly residential, with beautiful single home villas and urbanisations, and is located on the hills by Puerto Banus. Albatross Hills and Las Alamandas are among the luxury apartment communities in this area.
San Pedro de Alcantara – Guadalmina
This town is part of the municipality of Marbella. The old town is ideal to stroll around as well as its Sea Promenade. There is a new area that is between the main road and the beach that is called Nueva Alcantara, where Linda Vista is also located.
Guadalmina is one of the first urbanizations of Marbella, just passed San Pedro. It is divided in two areas, South Guadalmina on the sea side, where you can find impressive properties, and North Guadalmina on the mountain side.
The town of Benahavis, raising by the deflection of the main road is about 5 min. by car. It is very well-taken care of and you will find multitude of restaurants of different specialties, although mainly of Andalusian food. The municipality of Benahavis includes numerous urbanisations like La Alqueria, Capanes del Golf, Atalaya, Montemayor and Marbella Club, as well as several golf courses.
The municipal term of Estepona includes one long stretch of coast to both sides of the town, with well-known urbanizations like Los Flamingos, El Paraiso, El Campanario and others, as well as several golf clubs. Estepona is a fishing town that has developed in the last years, and counts with a very nice sea promenade and a yacht marina with restaurants and bars.
